DNR (Do Not Resuscitate)

A medical order stating that cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) should not be performed if your heart stops or you stop breathing. A DNR is typically signed by your doctor and is different from a living will.

Practical Example

An elderly patient with terminal cancer discusses end-of-life options with her doctor and decides she does not want CPR if her heart stops. Her doctor writes a DNR order, and a copy is kept in her medical records and at her bedside.
