In estate planning, the person you appoint in a power of attorney to act on your behalf. Also called an attorney-in-fact. Your agent has the authority to make financial, legal, or healthcare decisions as specified in the document.

Practical Example

In her durable power of attorney, Martha names her daughter as her agent. If Martha becomes incapacitated, her daughter can sign checks, pay bills, file taxes, sell property, and handle all financial matters on Martha's behalf.
